Newstead 5K for Achieve on Saturday September 24th 2011
This year’s 9th annual Newstead 5K race will help to promote outstanding education in our schools
July 26, 2011 — Put on your running shoes and join over 400 South Orange and Maplewood residents who will be part of this fall’s Newstead 5K on Saturday, September 24, 2011. Now in its ninth year, the race benefits The Achieve Foundation of South Orange and Maplewood, formerly known as the South Orange-Maplewood Education Foundation (SOMEF).
The spirit and sense of community that lead up to the event are clearly demonstrated on race day as runners from across New Jersey gather at the starting line. From serious runners to families out for a morning of fun and fitness, they all join together to build awareness and raise funding for supplemental programs and activities in our schools.
“It’s fun to see the quiet neighborhood streets of Newstead transformed into a fun-filled event for families and friends,” said Race Founder Helen Dubowy. “The race has grown since it was adopted as an annual event by the Achieve Foundation. Their board and volunteer committee get involved with every aspect of the planning. People start coming up to me in July asking what color this year’s t-shirts will be – it has become a much anticipated community race.”
Runners, walkers and school age “fun runners” are invited. Entry fees are $20 through September 20th or $25 after that date. New sponsors (businesses and individuals) are also encouraged to support this wonderful community event at levels starting at $100.
Over the past 20 years, this local education foundation has transformed private contributions into initiatives that help students, teachers and administrators in the School District of South Orange & Maplewood to grow and succeed. The foundation’s purpose is to give our children and our schools the resources they need to achieve the highest levels of excellence, innovation and equality in education.
A perfect event to kick-off off the school year, participation will play a part in helping our schools sustain a high quality education and ensure a bright future for all of the children in the South Orange and Maplewood schools. Don’t miss out on the fun!
